The challenge
The COVID-19 pandemic fueled a surge in food delivery services, leading to an 85% increase in food delivery transactions in the United States.
While many of us enjoyed the convenience of having food delivered to our doorsteps within minutes, it’s essential to consider the workers and staff responsible for receiving, preparing, and packaging these orders.
During my time at a boba tea shop, I noticed a critical challenge with operational efficiency, especially in the online ordering system.
Multiple platforms led to inconsistent menus, outdated data, and manual errors, and without a unified system to manage both in-person and online orders, one often lagged behind the other.

I went forward with a competitive analysis to assess whether there were any pre-existing platforms that aligned with my project objectives.
I studied several platforms to discern their respective strengths and pain points, drawing inspiration for my project development.

If customer service is necessary, it needs to be easily accessible
Users prefer a system with minimal interaction for viewing orders

ideation
Based on the evidence gathered from research & interviews, I went forward with 2 types of brainstorming methods: Crazy 8's and Reverse Ideation.
For Crazy 8's, I folded a piece of printer paper to create 8 sections, set a timer for 8 minutes, and sketched 1 idea per minute.

I then moved on to Reverse Ideation, where I wrote down negative ideas (ideas to make the problem even worse!), then reversed each one to create potential solutions.

For my first concept, I chose to create three main containers: new & incoming orders, in-progress orders, and ready-to-go orders.
New orders would appear on the lefthand column, lighting up the entire screen in red to signal urgency and alert employees.

For this concept, I explored the idea of creating just two containers instead of three.
Each order within the container is bigger, which leaves more room and allows employees to view the order without having to tap to view.

Then, I went through my first two concepts and compared them with the components in the information architecture design.
Since my two concepts and architecture weren't entirely identical, I chose to review and determine which elements to retain and which to modify or prefer, leading to my final design.

OrderSync offers a user-friendly interface with two sections: "In-Progress" and "Ready-to-go" orders.
Users can switch between "Block" view for fewer orders and "List" view for higher volumes.
New orders appear at the bottom, prioritized by urgency.

When a new order arrives, employees receive a "New Order" notification and a gentle three-ring jingle, repeating after 60 seconds if unconfirmed.
They can tap the notification to confirm the order, prepare it, and mark it ready for delivery.
The delivery section will show "searching" for a driver, "ETA # minutes" for the driver's arrival time, and "arriving" when the driver is one minute away.
