The challenge

When it comes to choosing what to eat, nutrition is not exactly a priority for students.

Only 8% of college students consume the recommended daily amount of fruits & vegetables.

How can we help college students who struggle to eat healthier, or more specifically, struggle to eat more fruits and vegetables?

Around the University of Washington campus, all of the dining halls & markets offered a limited amount of "healthy" foods and fresh fruits, and were avoided by many students.

Vending machines would offer snacks such as chips or granola bars, but were tucked away in inconspicuous areas.

The price of fruit is too expensive.

Lack of variety leads to lack of choices.

Little to no nutritional value is understood or valued.

Students tend to buy groceries without a set plan or list.

Students are willing to try new things (and do), but only if it is appealing.

I then narrowed down 3 main values.

Concept 01 would make students would go through a short quiz on the vending machine screen, and upon completion, receive a fruit box according to their responses.

Each box would contain a different fruit, as well as a pairing element that complements the fruit (such as honey, nut, etc.)

Concept 02 was a "blind box", where the fun would be geared not towards the contents of the box, but in the discovery.

Each box would contain a different fruit & collectable keychain, in order to encourage students to try different types of fruit while collecting all of the keychains.

Keychains would have a QR code on the back, providing qualitative nutritional benefits & a visual ripeness scale.

User Feedback

Design workshop #1A

Participants were asked to provide a pro & con for different container forms.

Further discussion of responses concluded that the box form was not ideal, as there were multiple issues with the viability & user experience.

iterations

With the feedback in mind, I made a couple changes to help change the flow & interaction of the elements.

I ditched the box form and change the form to a resealable pouch, in order to direct the main use purpose as a grab-n-go snack.

Before, the main use case remained unclear for participants (and even myself), so this proved to be helpful in refining the goal & purpose.

iterations cont.

I decided to list the health benefits on the back, as it seemed to be the most informative & useful information, from the feedback gained in the priority matrix.

In changing to the pouch form, I also switched the contents of the fruit snack box to be a fruit juice/smoothie, and completely got rid of the collectable keychains.

To tie it all together, I got rid of the quiz interaction on the vending machine, as it was counterintuitive.

Vending machines are purposed to be a quick and easy interaction and students, do not have the leisure to take a five minute quiz between classes.

+ Vending Machine

Students are presented with two choices: to return, or purchase.

As a vending machine, the interface is simple and meant to be used for quick, easy browsing and shopping, so that students can conveniently consume 1-2 servings of fruit anytime.

Selecting “purchase” will present the student with 5 seasonal flavors on rotation, only the fruits that are in season during this time are available.

When selecting “return”, students scan their student ID to place an empty pouch in the designated compartment, allowing their return data to be tracked without extra registration.

With multiple machines across campus, students can return pouches nearby and accumulate points for future discounts while ensuring proper disposal.

+ Juice Pouch

This form was specifically chosen for its mobility and ease of use, and is resealable if students are unable to finish it in one sitting, or need to stuff it into their backpack before class.

The pouch itself is made of biodegradable material. The option of returning the pouches back to the machines serve as a proper way of disposal, as well as an incentive to come back and purchase another.

Qualitative health benefits are listed, providing a higher level of information than the traditional nutrition label. The QR code on every pouch reveals more information.

Students can learn how to pick the most ripe fruit, informing them to encourage incorporating fruit into their grocery shopping.

The simple interface includes a menu page, where all current fruits and flavors are listed, so that students can learn more about a selection of fruits, not just one.

what i would do differently…

If I had the chance, I would go back and obtain data from a greater sample of students.

The number of students that attend the University of Seattle is approximately 40,000, with my survey responses totaling a number of 50 students, which is a substantially small sample population.

If I was to go back and gather more data, I would be able to more accurately represent the student population and their needs.
